Day 1 (16-day format)

6:05 - Introductions

6:15 - Syllabus

7:00 - Blackboard demo

7:20 - break

7:30 - Into the textbook!  Chapter 1: Introduction

Myth ("what they say") and pop culture (superheroes, Disney, etc...) as expression of fundamental values and identity.
Symbolic statements of who we are, or intend to be.  NOT statements of scientific truth.

We constantly reinterpret elements of our culture, as we re-tell the stories.
We "impose our present on the past," such as when we argue about what the founding fathers intended, or what Jesus really meant, etc...

Organic solidarity - strength through diversity, E Pluribus Unum = from many, one.

Original Star Trek cast - diversity as a vision for America's future, a story we told ourselves in the 1960's about what the future would bring,
which was a reflection of who we were and what were dealing with then.

TNG Cast

Triumph of American culture, not through conquering, but through convincing, attracting, and voluntarily assimilating others into "the Federation"

Here is an interesting article using DS:9 as a study of the norms of the 1990's.  (old version)

8:00 - GOALS OF THE BOOK:
  • analyze socio-cultural trends of unity and diversity
  • shed light, through comparison, on aspects of human variation

What does it mean to be an "American"?

-melting pot?

-various cultures, histories, points-of-view, degrees of empowerment, etc...?

-pressures to exhibit "generic" American cultural traits in immigrant groups?

Anthropological approach (interpretive, symbolic-interactionist)

-holistic (takes into account biology, culture, technology, economics, politics, time period, etc...)

-ethnographic (qualitative, participant-observation)

-variables (quantitative, surveys) (America is very heterogneous)

If there is time, watch Kwame Anthony Appiah's interview on "cosmopolitanism" @22:00
